You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown
a review by Neil Carnahan The Basics This new DVD release of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown is the almost hour-long animated version of the original off-Broadway musical of the same name. Almost plotless, this Charlie Brown fouses entirely on the music. Each song is filled with whimsy, humor and fun.
When I started this DVD, I really had no idea that it was a musical. I had heard of the stage play of the same name but never realized what it was, so I was a bit surprised to see
a musical based on the Charlie Brown characters. As I mentioned above, the show itself is almost entirely without plot, staying true the daily comic strip format, which for the most part,
were stand-alone strips that didn’t have to relate to each other. And that was how this went, each scene stayed true to whichever character was its focus but not having a threaded story
throughout. I personally don’t like musicals, but this one was more enjoyable than most because I’ve always loved the Charlie Brown characters. If you are a fan of musicals and of Charlie
Brown then this one shouldn’t be missed. You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown may not rank with the classics, such as A Charlie Brown Christmas and It’s the Great
Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, but frankly not many things do.

What the DVD Offers Also on the DVD is an almost 20-minute behind-the-scenes look at You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, with interviews of the original production team of these classic animated specials. It tells the background of the off-Broadway play as well as the animated version. To me, this was even more enjoyable than the feature itself. This is one DVD special feature that you don’t want to miss out on.
