Spring Breakdown
a review by Heith Carnahan

The Basics

Gayle, Becky, and Judi (Amy Poehler, Parker Posey, and Rachel Dratch, respectively) are three lifelong friends who thought they'd been through it all together. They survived the many social horrors of college and went on to become semi-strong, semi-independent women whose lives... have gone absolutely nowhere.

When Becky is assigned to "unofficially" chaperone her boss's daughter through the wild minefield that is South Padre Island during spring break, the three friends see it as an opportunity to shed their tragically un-hip lives and cut loose with the beer-and-bikini set for the first time ever. But coming out of their respective shells sends the girls in very different directions, and they'll need to rely on each other to remember who they are, and ultimately, who they want to be going forward.

And what a surprise Spring Breakdown turned out to be. What could easily have become an afterthought in the bargain bin turned out to be one of the better spring break comedies in quite some time, and we have the three leading ladies to thank. Director Ryan Shiraki leaves this ship in the capable hands of Amy Poehler, who is no stranger to taking the lead on-screen; Parker Posey takes on a sweet, demure role we've never seen before and flourishes as a result; and Rachel Dratch (who frankly has always kind of scared me) shows us a very human, very likable Judi we're not afraid to relate to and root for.

Amber Tamblyn's role as Ashley, the Senator's daughter, is perfectly brought to life by a very capable young actress, and a number of other fun, hysterical roles take shape around her in the form of Charlene (the hilarious Missi Pyle), Mason (Sophie Monk), and Senator Kay Bee Hartmann (the always-reliable Jane Lynch). Anyone who ever went on spring break (or wished they had) should not miss Spring Breakdown. There is something -- indeed, someone -- in it for everyone.

What the DVD Offers

The DVD features a full-length commentary by director Ryan Shiraki and writer/co-producer/co-star Rachel Dratch.

There's also a great gag reel, and since "deleted scenes" seems to be out of vogue nowadays with the young 'uns, the disc features a section of "additional scenes," which are more than worth a look.
