Snakes on a Plane
a review by A.J. Newirth

The Basics

If you could read the title, then you know what the movie is about. For those of you with comprehension issues, here’s the two-cent summary review.

A motorcyclist, Sean Jones, cruising the terrain of Hawaii stumbles across a murder carried out by the notorious Eddie Kim and his hoodlums. When Kim’s men catch up with Jones (Nathan Phillips) in his apartment, Neville Flynn (Samuel L. Jackson) mysteriously appears in time to save his life. What follows is the movie’s namesake. Jones becomes a protected witness, and Flynn transports him to Los Angeles to testify. But Kim has poisonous snakes placed in the cargo hold, and pheromones sprayed on the leis. Insanity ensues.

Overall, the movie’s plot is amazing, and has great potential. As far as horror stories go, the thought of being trapped in a confined space, inescapable and surrounded by snakes (and in this case poisonous) is a psychological terror. However, it’s the B-rate acting that ruins this movie.

Sam-u-el plays his usual larger-than-life badass character, who emerges unscathed by the reptiles. But his lines are forced, as are the other characters’, and the overall atmosphere is campy. A supporting cast would have vastly improved the film, but only Julianna Margulies stands out; and it’s only by name.

Sadly, David Koechner (Champ Kind of Anchorman) is underused in the movie. With his comedic talent, he could have salvaged some of the film’s pride. However, his part is grossly underwritten.

The movie ends when the plane lands. And it’s just as well. Don’t waste your time with this one. My advice: Re-read the title, and think really hard. Sorry Sammy!
