P.S. I Love You
a DVD review by Heith Carnahan

The Basics

Hilary Swank is Holly Kennedy -- bright, gorgeous, and married to Gerry (Gerard Butler), a passionate and impetuous Irishman. But when Gerry's life is cut short by a brain tumor, it takes the life out of Holly. Before he died, though, he wrote Holly a series of letters that would guide her not only through her grief, but also in rediscovering herself. He always ended his letters the same way: P.S. I love you.

Holly's mother (Kathy Bates) and friends are concerned that Gerry's letters will keep her tethered to the past, but the truth is that each one pushes her farther into a new future. With Gerry's letters as her guide, Holly sets out on an exciting, heartfelt adventure across continents in a story about friendship, love, and the things that makes us strong.

Whoever said Hilary Swank was ill-suited for romantic comedy was simply mistaken. The few moments of physical comedy in the film would probably have been better suited to, say, Sandra Bullock, but the truth is, this isn't that kind of movie. Swank and Gerard Butler (who, with this film, certainly is broadening his horizons, career-wise) have an incredible on-screen chemistry, and Swank's character also shares a warm chemistry with Gina Gershon and Lisa Kudrow as the two friends accompany Holly on her journey. In fact, Kudrow herself steals many of the scenes in her quest to find Mr. Right in the midst of it all, and Gershon takes on a surprisingly substantial role that, for once, doesn't involve taking her top off.

P.S. I Love You is many things, but one thing it isn't is short on emotion. The film is wall-to-wall sentimentality, so it's going to appeal more to the women in the audience, but don't sell it short based on that, guys -- this was one of the better romantic comedies of the year, and at the very least, any self-respecting fan of Hilary Swank won't miss it.

What the DVD Offers

"A Conversation with author Cecelia Abern" is a seven-minute interview with the author of the book the film is based on.

The disc also contains the music video "Same Mistake" by James Blunt, as well as a fun 50s-style instructional video called "The Name of the Game is Snaps," which teaches the audience how to play Snaps, the game featured in the movie.

There are also a handful of deleted scenes that sometimes double as outtakes, so don't miss that.
