The Basics

Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) is the "other" guy from the fictional 80s pop group Pop! His partner in Pop! went on to have a very successful solo career, while his own faded into the background of music history. Since then, his career has subsisted on royalties, small-stage appearances at county fairs and reunions, and the occasional songwriting credit.

Enter Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore), a maddeningly neurotic twenty-something with a housekeeping, plant-watering business of her own. Alex hires her to fill in for his vacationing housekeeper right about the time Cora Corman (Haley Bennett), the hottest new pop star of the day, approaches Alex about writing a new song... by Friday.

It's purely accidental, but Alex discovers that Sophie has a real knack for writing lyrics, which is the part of songwriting he's always had trouble with. Reluctantly, she agrees to help him out with the new song, and in the process, the two forge a relationship that quickly morphs into Something Else.

It's formulaic, it's played for laughs, and at best it offers a handful of surprises, but its undeniable charm and love of the game are evident enough. Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore have, despite their age difference, a chemistry that builds as the story progresses, and their comedic timing is so in tune with one another, you'll never believe this is their first film together. It also has a not-so-subtle commentary on the current state of pop divas that you'll realize as soon as you stop laughing.

This is one for the sappy romantic in all of us. It's not intended to win any awards or launch any careers. It doesn't pretend to be anything it's not or know anything we don't. It's just fun. And if you can't have fun with this one, well...

What the DVD Offers

The gag reel is worth at least one viewing, and there's also a thirteen-minute featurette called "Note for Note: The Making of Music & Lyrics" that doesn't suck. The "Pop Goes My Heart" video rounds out the extras, but that doesn't really count, since the film starts out with that anyway.
